Creative arts
Creative arts at Ashville allow pupils to develop self-expression and they are encouraged to participate at all levels of the College. Exploring creativity is an important part of personal development and it also informs an ability to work collaboratively, encouraging teamwork.
Taught by passionate subject specialists, pupils are expertly guided to develop their skills in art and design technology.
Acorns Early Years and Prep School
In Prep School pupils learn about the world around them through exploring colour and mark making from an early age, developing self-expression and fine motor skills.
Children in Acorns Early Years will produce artwork most days, experimentation is encouraged and in Years 1 and 2 a more focussed study of art begins. Pupils learn specific painting and drawing techniques and produce artwork in different styles.
In Years 3 to 6 pupils enjoy weekly lessons in Art and Design Technology; they explore a variety of media and learn about work from a range of artists. Pupils also have the opportunity to try their hand at creating 3D sculptures, tiling, sawing, drilling and participate in exciting projects such as creating their own pneumatic toys, mechanical fairground rides and textiles projects.
Senior School and Sixth Form
In Senior School pupils continue to build a working knowledge of materials, practices and technology within their Art and Design Technology lessons.
Pupils are encouraged to create work that interprets and conveys their ideas and feelings through a variety of traditional and experimental materials including; charcoal, pastel, graphite, coloured pencils, paint, printing and resist techniques, as well as stitched, collaged, mixed media, digital recording and digital manipulation.
Design Technology lessons prepare pupils to participate confidently and successfully in an increasingly technological world. In the workshop pupils become creative thinkers and develop a range of practical skills and also learn to plan both their time and use of resources efficiently. Expert guidance is given to develop graphics and technical drawing skills, using both hand drawing techniques and computer aided design (CAD) software.
