Sports

The department, with the help of a number of non-specialist colleagues, is responsible for the teaching of curricular physical education and games for both the Senior and Junior Schools, as well as the teaching of the popular academic GCSE and AS/A2 PE courses. “Be the best you can be” is the philosophy of the department.

P.E. is a compulsory part of the curriculum for all year groups, up to and including the Sixth Form. In addition to this, students may opt to take GCSE (4 periods per week) and A level (8 periods per week). In Years 7, 8 and 9 there are two games afternoons each week, supplemented by school fixtures during or after school and Saturdays. From Year 10 upwards there is one games afternoon which involves all pupils, while many pupils have additional games afternoon if they are involved in sport on our activity afternoon or in representative Saturday fixtures. This is supplemented by a varied selection of after-school and lunchtime training opportunities.

The department also leads the extra-curricular programme for all the major school sports. Each member of staff in the department has an overall responsibility for a sport in their specialist area, as well as responsibility for individual sports teams.  Our primary competitive winter sports are Rugby, Netball, Hockey and Swimming, while during the summer, Cricket, Athletics, Tennis and Rounders are our main sports.  Recreational sports offered include Archery, Badminton, Basketball, Climbing, Golf, Lacrosse, Squash, Trampolining, Table Tennis, Rock climbing,

In delivering the sports programme the school benefits from excellent facilities and the support of a hard working grounds staff. Our facilities include a 30metre indoor swimming pool, 2 Sports Hall, 2 squash courts, Multi-gym and extensive playing fields and surfaces for Netball, Rugby, Hockey, Athletics, Rounders and Cricket.

Playing sport is an important part of life at Ashville College and all children will be encouraged to participate, for we measure sporting achievement by physical health and enjoyment as well as the self worth gained from the many chances to represent one’s house or school.  The extra – curricular programme is designed to support, contribute and compliment the sports curriculum. Pupils are encouraged to develop positive attitudes to competition and observe sporting etiquette. Those representing the school are expected to uphold the highest standards of performance and behaviour.

Throughout the year there is an extensive programme of fixtures for rugby, netball, swimming, hockey and basketball (winter and spring), cricket, rounders, tennis and athletics (summer). Please visit the calendar to view this term's programme. Most Saturdays during the school year are assigned to inter school fixtures, but fixtures also take place during the week, predominately after school. Other physical recreational opportunities are also provided throughout the year including squash, badminton, volleyball, table tennis and even frisbee golf.

Sport  allows  students at Ashville,

  • An understanding of the nature of competition.
  • A chance to compete to their full potential, with fair play and respect for the opposition.
  • While recognising that winning carries responsibility and losing can be an opportunity to learn.
  • That there is more to  winning at all costs but
  • Not stepping up to compete is, equally, to limit an individual’s achievement and potential

“Sport is a great vehicle for learning about oneself, learning about others, and learning about society. Sport can be a great release, allowing pupils to return to the class room and work that bit harder”
