Pastoral Care
Pastoral care at Ashville is focused on the development of the individual as a whole, and is at the heart of all that we do. A positive nurturing environment enables each student the opportunity to achieve to the best of their ability in many different extracurricular activities which compliment and indeed enhance their academic studies.
Mrs Elspeth Fisher (Senior Deputy) has overall responsibility for student welfare and works closely with Heads of Year and Form Tutors ensure students are well cared for. Students are allocated to a tutor group under the care of a form tutor who stays with them throughout the year. For the GCSE years the form tutor remains with the group providing additional support through this crucial stage in their education. Sixth Form tutors likewise provide continuity throughout the A Level years whilst being a source of advice and support as the young people plan for their future. We aim to work closely with parents, focusing always on the importance of the three way relationship between student, staff and parents. If a student is experiencing problems in the first instance we ask parents to approach the relevant Year Head who can advise on the best course of action.
Students have regular contact with their form tutor who also delivers their PSHE programme on Wednesday mornings. Assemblies are held during the rest of the week enabling the whole school to meet as a community as well as allowing us to celebrate individual and team success, whether it is academic, cultural or sporting. Commendations allow staff to reward students for good effort, academic success, a willingness to help others or contributing to the wider life of the school. These are are used to aid the promotion of self-worth, self-esteem and confidence within the individual, crucial for their on-going development.
Ashville has a School Chaplain who is actively involved in the life of the College and helps with the provision of pastoral care, whether it is mediation, bereavement or general support.
Ashville encourages students to have a voice in the future development of the school and the Student Council provides a medium for this to take place. Students work with senior management to ensure that the views of their peers are represented during fortnightly Council meetings. Recent successful initiatives include the introduction of the Student Council Award which recognises the additional contributions made by students or staff (teaching or support).
At Ashville we believe very strongly that everyone can find a niche for themselves. We do everything we can to help students indentify their strengths and find that niche. Wherever interest lies for the individual, Ashville will give them the chance to shine, and to realise their full potential, ready for life after school.
