Music

The Ashville College Music Department engages as many pupils as possible in the experience of enjoyable, stimulating and productive performances. We offer opportunities both for the relative novice as well as the highly committed instrumentalist or singer through a broad range of musical activities. Each week over 250 students take individual music lessons addition to the comprehensive range of music ensembles.

All the creative acts of group music-making take place outside the formal curriculum. A team of 13 visiting music teachers and 3 full time staff teach students (click here to see a full list of teachers) in all band and orchestral instruments, guitar, singing, piano and organ.

The school has a long tradition of choral singing with numerous visits venues such as Ripon Cathedral and York Minster. In addition to the more select choirs in the Senior School there is a Choral Society to which all pupils are encouraged to attend. Regular concerts in Leeds Town Hall have been an educational experience for up to 300 Ashville pupils. For the string players, following the free tuition given in Year 4, the Senior Orchestra provides an outlet for their talents.

Jazz in the Senior School is thriving with a Improvisation Group leading to membership of ACJB (Ashville College Jazz Band). The Soul Band adds a further dimension to the vocal styles pursued by pupils. The Concert Band now numbers between 50 and 60 and join ACJB and the Soul Band in regular tours, most recently to Normandy, where they performed to great acclaim.

The music quality and quantity on offer at Ashville far exceeds the expectations of a school this size, and we are proud that so many students are involved in music outside of the curriculum. Ashville nurtures those with musical talent, and as a result Scholarships are on offer for those with outstanding talents. Further details can be found  on the main School Scholarships page. indeed many of our scholars have gone on to study music at University and have professional careers in this field.

“I cannot think of another school in the North of England that would have attempted such an ambitious programme of music. This must count as one of the most rewarding occasions staged in Leeds Town Hall for some time, with a gratifyingly large audience to share it.’” – Yorkshire Post, Harrogate Advertiser March 2007.
