Pastoral Care

Ashville College is a happy and caring school, and staff and pupils alike do everything possible to ensure that children settle quickly and happily. Although all staff take an interest in pastoral care, class teachers and house staff have the most contact and responsibility.
Class teachers get to know children in their charge very quickly and time is set aside to discuss and monitor problems. Children are encouraged to share their concerns and to ask for help. Parents are urged to make contact with class teachers or the Head of Junior School as soon as there is a need.

After School Care
This is structured to allow children the chance to do homework and to have a snack and play. Supper is available on request. Aftercare is provided by Kindercare of Harrogate and details are available from the Junior School secretary on request.

Junior School Council
We believe that when children arrive at Junior School, they are getting to an age when they can accept more responsibility and face new challenges. In all aspects of their school life, from lessons through to playtime, we do everything we can to help them meet, and enjoy, these challenges.
One of the ways in which we promote this sense of ownership, is through the Junior School Council. Pupils from every class nominate friends who they think will add to the community and make it a better place. Candidates prepare their manifestoes, canvass for votes and take part in an election. Although teachers oversee council meetings, the children run them – they make the decisions and manage their budget. The Council works hard to improve our school and has suggested numerous schemes that we have implemented, such as introducing a friendship bench, developing a quiet area in the playground, and introducing fresh fruit to the school menu.

The Golden Rules
Our discipline policy has evolved by encouraging pupils to think about self-discipline rather than seeing rules as a set of instructions that are imposed on them. We ask them to identify principles that would make Junior School a happy and productive place and help them to distil their ideas and take ownership of the Five Golden Rules. Everyone is involved and these rules are so embedded into our daily life that children rarely think about breaking them.

Personal Health, Social Education and Citizenship
A thorough programme covering sex education, personal hygiene, drugs, etc has been put together for Junior School children. Parents receive an overview of the PHSEC course before it is taught and there is consultation on sensitive areas.
