Junior
Sport
The College is blessed with an outstanding range of sporting facilities, to which the Junior School pupils have full access. The site boasts an impressive list of facilities, particularly for a Junior School. There are extensive playing fields with rugby pitches, football pitches, tennis courts, athletics track, three cricket squares and an indoor swimming pool. The school also has two fully equipped sports halls.
The sports programme is designed to incorporate all abilities and our aim is to teach an awareness of the social advantages that involvement in sport can bring as well as to coach specific games to a high standard.
In the Autumn Term, our main boys’ sport is rugby, while the girls play netball. In the Lent term there is rugby and football on offer for boys and netball and hockey for the girls. Gymnastics, Dance, Basketball and racquet skills are also covered. Athletics is provided for all our pupils in the Summer Term, as well as cricket for the boys and netball for the girls.
Swimming is a strength across the College. We offer opportunities for competitive swimmers in the form of weekly squad training and for improving swimmers in our extra curricular programme. All our pupils will swim during the year as part of their PE syllabus.
Cross-country running is also a part of the games programme, with opportunities to compete in the local Primary Schools’ cross-country league.
We undertake an extensive fixture list in all major sports from U9 level upwards and compete at HMC (North East) level, which can take us as far a field as Sheffield, Humberside and Tyneside. We also host the North Yorkshire Prep School Sports Day, as well as a local Primary Schools Football Festival.
Our older children also have the opportunity to participate in sports tours. Bath and the West Country is a popular destination for our rugby and netball teams, while the swim squad enjoys a biennial training camp in Barcelona.

Headteacher Welcome
Years 3 – 6 are a time of great change for your children. You will see them develop very quickly, both academically and socially.
Ashville Junior School fosters a special community, instilling values and standards which are often overlooked in the twenty-first century. With awareness of each other and society in general, children grow up with confidence within a Christian framework; this is all part of being a Methodist school.
